WHAT SPRING PRODUCE TO BUY LOCALLY THIS SEASON

Resources April 20, 2021

Each season brings with it exciting, new focuses. For our family, the spring months mean we can transition out of winter, prepare the farm for spring blooms, and enjoy the beautiful weather and extended hours of sunshine. This year, we have added hundreds of trees to the landscape.

For many of our community members, the spring also means fresh and tasty seasonal pickings are now available at local farms and stands. In Pennsylvania, we see a variety of spring produce and herbs at their peak in the spring months. What should you grab while it’s in bloom this season?

Why Choose Items In Season Right Now?

While a lot of produce can be purchased year-round in grocery stores, getting your hands on these fresh and in-season items offers numerous benefits. For peak-season produce in Pennsylvania, you may want to buy it locally from a farm or market for any of these reasons:

  • Peak season fruits and vegetables offer a better, more micronutrient-rich product. These items are higher in the essential vitamins and minerals your body craves and thrives on.

  • Seasonal produce items are often cheaper at local farms and markets than they are at grocery stores. This is because farmers like us can grow in higher volumes and don’t have to add transportation costs to the sale price.

  • Items grown in season simply taste better! Have you ever been to a farm-to-table restaurant? They often focus on in-season produce for this very reason!

  • The money you spend on local produce at farms and markets goes right back into your community. Unlike stores that supply produce from other states, our products are always fresh, pesticide-free, and grown with you in mind.

Staples To Stock Up On

In addition to seasonal items that will be gone before you know it, there are many staples you can also take advantage of at your local farm or market. Things like fresh raw milk, tasty cheeses, grass-fed beef, and of course, ice cream, can all be complements to the seasonal items you prioritize during your meals.
